Cancel Your SASSA Relief Grant. You can Cancel SASSA Grant if you no longer require it due to a change in your circumstances or if you wish to empower those in need more than you. This step is also important to avoid government penalties and constraints that may affect your eligibility for government jobs after being a SASSA beneficiary.

This process is simple, requiring you to complete a consent form and submit it online. After SASSA approves your R370 grant cancellation request, your monthly payments will stop. You can follow our instructions to cancel your SASSA Grant correctly, ensuring that funds can be reallocated to those who still require financial assistance.

In this guide, first, I will clarify when you need to cancel your grant and walk you through the simple steps to do so so you can ensure the ethical use of the government’s valuable resources.

Guide to Cancel Your SASSA Relief Grant - Step-By-Step

Reasons You Need to Cancel Your SRD Grant

While the SRD grant is a valuable resource if you are facing financial hardship, there may be conditions where canceling is the right decision. If you identify yourself in any one of the below scenarios, then you should immediately cancel your grant:

  • Improved Circumstances: If your financial condition has improved from the time you applied. This means you are earning more than the SASSA means test threshold or having assets that exceed the means test limit.
  • Applying For Job: Certain private and government jobs have restrictions on receiving the SRD grant. If you are continuously applying for these types of job positions but facing rejection due to your SRD grant.
  • Supporting Others in Needs: If you feel that you are in a much better financial position than many others, such as job seekers or families in dire need. Canceling your grant can free up resources for them.
  • Ineligibility Concerns: If you have any doubts about your eligibility for the grant. In this scenario, consult with SASSA for clarification. Receiving the grant payments while you are ineligible is considered unethical and can have legal consequences as well.

These are just a few reasons, but the main cause remains the same: you must be in need and eligible if you are receiving the grant. Canceling is not mandatory if you are still eligible.

Step-By-Step Process to Cancel Your SASSA Relief Grant Application

Before starting the cancellation process, first, check the status of your grant and see if your grant is still active. If it is not active, then you don’t need to cancel your grant, as it’s already been canceled.

If it is active then you need to follow one of the below four methods to cancel your SRD grant.

Tip: The same cancellation process applies to all SASSA grants, including child supportdisability, and all other grants.

1. Cancelling Your Grant Online Via SASSA Services Portal

The easiest and fastest way to cancel your SASSA grant online is to cancel it within no time from the comfort of your home. Just follow the below steps to cancel:

  • Visit the SASSA official portal via the link: https://srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/cancellation
  • This page has two input boxes, one for ID number and the other for cellphone number.
  • Provide your 13-digit ID Card Number and the Phone Number you used to apply for the SASSA grant, respectively, in these input boxes.
  • Now, click on the “Send Pin” button. It will send an OTP to your phone number.
  • Provide that code on the website screen to verify your identity, as SASSA needs to know that you are the original applicant who wants to cancel the grant.
  • After providing the OTP, click on the “Cancel My Grant” button.
  • A new popup will appear with a message: “Are you sure to cancel your grant application?
  • Click “Yes” to reconfirm the cancellation to terminate your grant.
  • After reconfirmation, a confirmation message will be received on your registered SASSA phone number saying, “Your request to cancel the SASSA Grant has been sent.

That’s it! You have successfully submitted the request to cancel your SASSA grant.

2. Cancel Your SRD Grant via WhatsApp

The other convenient method to submit your grant cancellation request is via WhatsApp. You will need to follow the below steps:

  • First of all, save the SASSA WhatsApp number 082 046 8553 in your phone contact list.
  • Now, write the message “Cancel SASSA R350 Grant” to that WhatsApp number.
  • You will receive a response with a list of options to choose from.
  • Select “Cancel my application” from this list.
  • Now, you will be requested to provide your ID number and SASSA registered Phone Number for confirmation.
  • Reply with your ID number and cellphone Number to confirm your cancellation.

That’s it. Your cancellation request has been successfully submitted.

3. Cancelling Your SASSA Grant via Email

The other less-known method is to cancel the SASSA relief grant via sending an email to SASSA. I prefer the first method to cancel the application online, but still, you may have different choices. If you wish to submit the cancellation request via email, you need to follow these steps:

  • Open your email application at your phone or computer, and select the option to write a new email.
  • In the subject line, clearly state that the email is related to the cancellation of your SASSA grant.
  • In the email body, describe your request that you want to cancel your SRD grant. You can also mention the reason for which you want to cancel your grant.
  • Include your SASSA reference number, ID number and phone number within the email. As it’s the only source SASSA can identify your application.
  • If you have any specific questions about the grant cancellation and what happens after it, you can include them in your email as well.
  • Now, recheck your email content, specifically your application reference number, ID number and phone number.
  • Once everything is correct, send the email to SASSA at [email protected].

4. Cancel Your SRD Grant via Calling SASSA Helpline

If you are not comfortable with any of the above methods and want real human interaction, then you can use this method to cancel your application. Please follow the below steps:

  • Call the SASSA helpline Toll-Free number at 0800 60 10 11.
  • Listen to the automatic voice and choose the option to talk with a human agent. Unusually, it is 1, so press”1”.
  • Ask the call center agent if you want to cancel your SASSA grant.
  • They will request you to provide your ID number, phone number and any other additional documents for the identity verification.
  • Provide them with the requested details.
  • After they verify your identity, they will approve your cancellation request.

That’s all you need to submit the request via call. Sometimes, you may have to wait for the agent to pick up your call as there are hundreds of people calling the SASSA helpline simultaneously. Your call will be entertained once an agent is available.

Note: Please make sure that you are calling from the phone number you used for your SASSA grant. SASSA may not verify your identity if you used any other cellphone number to request the grant cancellation.

How Much Time SASSA will take to Approve My Grant Cancellation Request?

Once you submit your grant cancellation request, SASSA will review it within 7 days. The duration may be increased or decreased depending on the requests they have. Once your request is reviewed and approved for cancellation, you will receive an SMS notification on your phone number.

After that, you will no longer be an SASSA beneficiary, and your grant payments will be stopped.

How Can I Cancel My SASSA Relief Grant Application Without a Phone Number?

If you don’t have the phone number but want to cancel your SASSA relief grant, you will need to visit your nearest SASSA office. Please take along your ID card document, as the SASSA representative will verify your identity before approving your cancellation request.

If you can’t visit the SASSA office due to sickness, disability, or any other reason and want to cancel online. Then, first, you will need to change your SASSA registered phone number from the SASSA web portal. Once you change your phone number, you will be able to cancel your grant online.

Can I Reinstate My Cancelled SASSA Grant Again in the Future?

Yes, of course, you can reinstate your canceled SASSA relief grant in the future. First of all, I hope you don’t face any bad circumstances in the future again, but still, life is unpredictable.

SASSA understands that and always aims to help its citizens in need, and hence provides ways to reinstate the grant if someone is in dire need again. You will need to submit the SASSA reinstatement application to get your canceled grant back.

What Happens If I Continue Receiving SASSA Grant While Ineligible?

If you were eligible in the past when you applied for the SASSA grant, but now you are not eligible anymore according to the SASSA means test and other eligibility criteria according to your respective grant. Then you must cancel your grant to stop receiving grant payments, as it is considered a serious offense, and you may face the following consequences:

  • Fraud Charges: Receiving any grant while ineligible is considered fraud. This can lead to criminal charges, a fine, and even imprisonment. The severity of the consequences will depend on the amount of money involved and your intent behind continuing to receive the grant.
  • Debt Recovery: SASSA has the right to recover any overpayments made to you. This means they can demand you repay the amount you received while ineligible, with possible interest and penalties added.
  • Blacklisting: Your name could be blacklisted from receiving any future SASSA grants or other government assistance programs.

So, it will make your life so much harder, and you may not even be able to fulfill your needs due to the repayment of grant money. It will also badly affect your reputation, and it will be hard for you to secure any job or loan in the future due to your criminal record.

Please remember that SASSA conducts the checks regularly to identify ineligible grant recipients, and they will eventually find you. If you realize at any moment that you are not eligible for a grant anymore, contact SASSA immediately to cancel your grant application.
