CUAET Program Canada
The CUAET program was introduced by the Government of Canada to allow Ukrainians in Canada as temporary visitors. The regular temporary measures for the visitors are for a 6-month duration, whereas the CUAET program allows the Ukrainians to stay for 3 years.
The Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) program not only provided temporary stay but also allowed the Ukrainians to study as well as work in Canada.
How to Apply for CUAET?
The last date to apply for the CUAET (visitor visa) has already passed on July 15, 2023. This means that new applicants can no longer apply for a visitor visa under the CUAET program in Canada.
Now that the applications can no longer be submitted, the only option to apply for a visitor visa is through the regular process.
This means that the applicants applying on any date after 15/07/2023 have to apply through the regular method. The regular process can only provide a visitor visa for up to 6 months.
The process to apply for CUAET before July 15, 2023, was completely online. People can only access the CUAET application online, they cannot apply via the visa application center or the Canadian Embassy.
After submitting the application, people were asked to provide their biometrics. This information was asked through an email, which also included instructions on how to send the biometrics.
Once the visa is received by the individual, they can travel to Canada. The CUAET application doesn’t require any fee, and there is no need to pay any money to anyone.
However, the deadline for the CUAET application has already passed. If a person wishes to get a visitor visa, they can check the process from the authorized website of the Canadian Government.
CUAET Key Dates
The key dates associated with the Canada-Ukraine authorization for emergency travel (CUAET) are as follows –
- July 15, 2023:Â The deadline for applying for a visitor visa.
- March 31, 2024:Â This is the deadline to enter Canada under the CUAET Program. A person who has a travel visa under the CUAET Program and fails to arrive in Canada before this date cannot get various support offered under this program.
- March 31, 2024:Â This is the deadline to either change or extend the temporary residency status under the CUAET Program. Until this deadline passes, no application fee is applicable for extension or changing purposes.
If any changes in these dates are made, the IRCC will notify by providing information on its authorized website. Therefore, it is important to regularly check the latest updates and notices published by the IRCC.
Who is Eligible for it?
Citizens of Ukraine and their family members were allowed to apply for the CUAET program. This means the following individuals were eligible to apply under the CUAET program –
- Ukrainian national
- Family members of Ukrainian national – (spouse/dependent children/spouse’s dependent children/dependent children of a dependent child of Ukrainian national.
It is not possible to apply for all family members in a single application. A separate application is required for each eligible family member.
If you are applying for a child under 18 years of age, you need to provide a copy of the child’s birth certificate and a letter of authorization from the parent who is not accompanying the child to Canada (if applicable).

According to the information, thousands of Ukrainians received support from the CUAET Program. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) received a total of 1,189,320 applications for the visitor visa under the CUAET program from March 17, 2022, to November 28, 2023.
Out of these 1,189,320 applications, a total of 936,293 applications were approved by the IRCC. In the same time frame, a total of 210,178 applicants arrived in Canada. More applicants are expected to arrive in Canada in due course.
The applicants also had the option to apply for an open work permit that allows them to find a job in Canada as soon as possible. These applicants were also not required to undergo an IME Exam overseas.
