You can change your banking details simply by sending an email to SASSA or by calling their phone number, but here is an easy way to change your banking details online through the SASSA web portal.

Steps Needed to Update SASSA Banking Details

In this article, we will walk you through the steps needed to update your SASSA banking details for R350.

The first step is to visit the SASSA official website through the link srd.sassa.gov.za and login into your account. If you are an SRD grant applicant but do not have an account on the SASSA web portal, you can make an account by providing your personal details and your SRD grant information. The account is necessary to change your banking details for SASSA.

For Asylum Seekers and Special Permit Holders:

If you are an asylum seeker or special permit holder, you must provide your file number, passport number and cell phone number for registration. The same details should be provided which you used to apply for the SASSA SRD grant.

For South African Citizens:

If you are a South African citizen, you only need to provide the 13-digit bar-coded ID card number you used initially to apply for the SASSA SRD R350 grant.

2. Go to the “Change Banking Details” Section

Once you are logged in to the web portal, you need to navigate to the “Change Banking Details” section. You have to update your banking details using this section.

3. Submit and Verify your Identity

After you navigate to the “Change Banking Details” section, you will need to prove your identity to start the process.

For Asylum Seekers and Special Permit Holders:

If you are an asylum seeker or special permit holder, you will be asked to provide your file number, passport number and cell phone number to prove your identity.

Please note that the Asylum Seekers and Special Permit Holders can only see their Pick ”n Pay point to collect their payments; they can’t provide their bank account.

If you are a South African citizen, you will be asked to provide your 13-digit bar-coded ID card number to prove your identity.

After you provide your identity number or other documents as an asylum seeker, you will receive an SMS on your registered phone number to verify your identity before you can change your banking details. The SMS will contain a secure link; you have to click on this secure link to continue the bank detail update process.

4. Update Your SASSA Banking Details with Your Preferred Payment Method

After you proceed to the secure link that was sent to your phone number, you will provided the instructions on the screen to follow. The instructions are simple to follow, and after proceeding, you will be asked to choose your preferred payment method.

If you don’t want to receive payments in your bank, you can also select your preferred payment method as Post Office outlet or a cash send service. However, since you are here to update your banking details, you should select the bank payment method.

Once you selected the bank payment method, you will be prompted to provide your banking details. You need to provide your bank account, which is registered on your own name, as SASSA cannot make payments for your grant in another person’s bank account.

5. Review Your Banking Details Before Submitting

Please provide your banking details carefully and review them before submitting them to ensure a smooth process and avoid any payment problems. Once you reviewed all the details and are confident that all the details are correct, click the submit button.

6. Verification Process and Waiting Time

After you submit the bank details, the system may ask you to provide additional information to verify your identity. Provide these details correctly. SASSA needs 5 to 7 business days to verify and reflect your updated bank details in their database. However, the processing time may vary depending on the volume of applications received. During this period, you need to wait and keep an eye on notifications from SASSA on your registered phone number.

Please note that it will not affect any payments that are due before your new banking details are approved. After your bank details are approved, you will receive your grant payments in your updated bank account in the next payment cycle.

7. Verify Details After Update

Once SASSA approves your updated banking details, you will receive an SMS on your registered phone number from SASSA. Then, you can log in to the online web portal and check if the changes have been applied and your banking information has been updated successfully.

Tips to Avoid Delays in Approving Your Updated Bank Details

I know no one likes the delays in their banking details update. Hence, to avoid any delays, you need to keep these tips in your mind:

  • Make sure that you provide all the required details, such as your ID number, bank account number, and branch code.
  • Review all the details carefully before submitting the form to avoid any mistakes.
  • Use a secure internet connection while submitting the application.
  • Do not submit the application multiple times. Just apply once and then wait for the SASSA notification.

What if You Did Not Receive the Confirmation After Waiting

If you did not receive any notification after seven business days from the day you submitted the application, you can log in to the portal to check if your banking details are updated. If the banking details are not updated yet, then you can call the SASSA call center or visit the SASSA nearest office to get the update about your bank detail update request.
