SASSA OTP Codes – How to Obtain, When to Use, and Security Measures

Share

SASSA OTP code is the One Time Pin generated whenever you access anything related to your SASSA grant. A unique pin is generated every time, and its validity is only 15 minutes. Whether you are applying for a SASSA grant or updating any information about your existing grant, you need to verify your identity by providing the correct OTP code sent to your registered SASSA phone number.

SASSA implemented the OTP to make your grant more secure, and only authorized applicants access or update their grant information. So, whenever you have to do any updates to your SASSA grant information, such as updating banking details, personal information, or changing your phone number, you must have your mobile phone nearby as the OTP will be sent to your registered phone number and you will only be able to complete update if you can provide OTP.

In this article, I will provide all the information you need about SASSA OTP, including when it is used, where it is required, how you can get it, the validity of the OTP code, and what to do if you cannot receive it. So, please keep reading to clarify all your SASSA OTP queries.

When do I need the SASSA OTP?

The SASSA OTP is needed every time you want to update your SASSA grant information. It is also required when you are applying for a new grant. You will need the OTP if you need to do one of the following operations:

Apart from the operations mentioned above, you will need the SASSA OTP whenever you need to log in to the SASSA services web portal or make any updates.

How to Get SASSA OTP Code?

You will get the OTP automatically whenever you do one of the above operations. For every SASSA grant information update, you will need to provide your registered phone number. The OTP will be sent to that number.

There are mainly two sources from where you do the updates and receive the OTP code:

  1. SASSA SRD Official Website
  2. SASSA WhatsApp Number

The primary source is doing the updates through the SRD website or SASSA services web portal. You can also apply for an SASSA SRD grant using WhatsApp and receive the OTP.

How Long Does My SASSA OTP Code Remain Valid?

The OTP code validity is less than 15 minutes as a security measure to protect your account. This time limit ensures that even if the OTP is intercepted, it will be useless after 15 minutes, reducing the risk of unauthorized access.

So, it’s essential to keep your phone nearby when requesting OTP and use it as soon as possible after you receive it. If the code expires, you’ll need to request a new one.

Security Note: Never share your OTP code with anyone, not even with someone claiming to be from SASSA.

OTP Code Not Received?

If you did not receive the OTP after requesting it, please wait for a full 15 minutes for the arrival of the OTP before another attempt. If the OTP fails to arrive even after multiple attempts or you entered the wrong OTP numerous times, then SASSA will show you the message “Already request, try again after 24 hours”.

To resolve this issue, please follow the below steps:

  • Wait for 24 hours before requesting a new OTP.
  • While requesting a new OTP, keep your phone in a place with a strong network signal to ensure its prompt delivery.
  • Before requesting the OTP, double-check that your phone number is correct and the same number you used to register for SASSA.
  • Ensure that the phone number you provide for the OTP request is accurate and the same number you used to register with SASSA.

If you still haven’t received the OTP after following the above instructions, please get in touch with the SASSA helpline at 0800 601 011 to resolve the issue.

Tip: If you provided the email address to the SASSA while submitting your application, you can also receive the OTP on that address. When requesting OTP, SASSA sends you OTP both by phone and email (if you provided the email during the application). So, you can also check your email inbox to receive the OTP.

What if I Receive an OTP Without Requesting it?

If you received an OTP on your SASSA registered phone number without requesting it, it may indicate someone is attempting to gain unauthorized access to your account. Please be cautious and don’t share the OTP with anyone, even with someone claiming to be from SASSA.

It is possible that the OTP was generated due to a glitch in the SASSA system, but that happens rarely. The most likely scenario is an unauthorized access attempt by an individual seeking to gain control of your grant.

In such a scenario, contact the SASSA helpline immediately to inform them about the unauthorized attempt and to secure your grant against fraud.

Tips to Prevent SASSA OTP Frauds

To avoid any OTP frauds, please always follow these the below tips:

1. Protect the Confidentiality of Your OTP

Be cautious of individuals attempting to trick or manipulate you into providing your OTP. Never share your OTP with anyone, even if someone claims to be from SASSA. SASSA will not request your OTP through unsolicited calls, messages, or emails.

2. Verify Communication Source:

Independently verify the source of any communication that includes an OTP. Contact SASSA directly using official contact details to confirm the legitimacy of the request.

3. Secure Your Mobile Device:

Set up a screen lock or password on your mobile device to prevent unauthorized access. Someone could access OTPs sent to your device if your phone is lost or stolen.

4. Educate Yourself on OTP Scams:

Keep yourself updated about common OTP scam tactics. Understanding the methods used by fraudsters can help you recognize and avoid potential threats.

5. Report Suspicious Activity:

If you receive an OTP without requesting it or suspect any fraudulent activity, report it to SASSA immediately using their official helpline or contact information.
